Adobe Lightroom Introduces AI-Powered Generative Remove Tool and 1-Click Lens Blur Feature

Adobe  has introduced Generative Remove in Adobe Lightroom, bringing the power of Adobe Firefly right into common picture editing processes on the Lightroom mobile, online, and desktop platforms. Generative removal is Lightroom’s most powerful removal tool to date, allowing anybody to remove undesired objects from any shot non-destructively in a single click by intelligently matching the deleted area with pixel perfect generations for high-quality, realistic, and breathtaking effects. Generative Remove offers all photographers with intriguing features ranging from removing distractions in family images to providing professionals with faster retouching workflows and more fine-grain control. Generative Remove is now accessible as an early access tool to millions of Lightroom users.

Lightroom

Today, Lightroom’s AI-powered Lens Blur feature is generally available with all-new presets, allowing anyone to achieve attractive blur effects on any shot with a single click. Combined with Lightroom’s world-class photo editing tools, these new capabilities speed up everyday workflows for pros and give hobbyists new photo editing superpowers, allowing everyone to create stunning photographs.

“Whether you’re a hobbyist or a professional photographer, everyone wants to be able to quickly and easily edit their photos on the go,” said Ashley Still, senior vice president and general manager of Creative Cloud at Adobe. “We’re excited to bring the magic of Firefly to Lightroom’s millions of users – so they can live in the moment knowing they have the most powerful tools to edit, manage and share anywhere they are.”

Accessing Generative Remove is as simple for Lightroom users as editing a shot or adding a preset. Generative Remove will help you edit even the most difficult backgrounds and surrounds, such as eliminating stains from a patterned shirt, tablecloth folds in food photography, unsightly reflections on water, and more. From removing distractions in travel images to enabling even more seamless retouching skills for professionals, Generative Remove provides everyone with additional creative possibilities and saves time so they can focus on what they do best: bringing their creative thoughts and work to life.

Adobe is constantly engaged with our community while Generative Remove is in early access to continue to collect feedback from the photographic community, enhance the model, and increase the possibilities of Generative AI in the Lightroom ecosystem.

Firefly power

Firefly has sparked an incredible community response and has been used to generate over 8 billion photos worldwide across Adobe creative products since its debut in March 2023. Generative Remove is driven by Firefly, a tool designed specifically for makers, photographers, and designers. Firefly is trained on licensed content, such as Adobe Stock, and is intended to generate commercial content that does not violate copyright or other intellectual property (IP) rights such as trademarks and logos. The deep integration of Firefly’s next-generation AI across several Adobe core tools enables new creative workflows that boost creativity while providing exact creative control.

Adobe Commits to Responsibly Innovate

Adobe is committed to developing AI that adheres to the company’s AI Ethics principles of accountability, responsibility, and transparency. As AI becomes more common in content creation, Adobe believes it is critical to offer customers with information about its use in the creative process. According to a recent Adobe study, 76% of U.S. customers believe it is important to know whether online content is generated using AI.

When Generative Remove becomes widely available, it will automatically attach Content Credentials to photographs modified with the tool in Lightroom. This announcement, together with C2PA-compliant cameras from Sony, Leica, Nikon, Canon, and Fujifilm, brings Adobe closer to enabling users to maintain a chain of trust by attaching Content Credentials to their content, ensuring authenticity from the point of capture to editing and publication.

Content Credentials, similar to a “nutrition label” for digital content, are tamper-evident metadata that can provide valuable information about how digital content was developed, edited, and released. Credentials are based on the C2PA open standard and backed by the Adobe-led Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), which was established in 2019 to boost confidence in the digital economy. Today, the CAI is a global coalition of over 3,000 members from tech, policy, media corporations, creative workers, scholars, and other fields who are all working to improve transparency in digital material.

Generative Remove is driven by Firefly Image 1 Model and is now accessible as an early access feature throughout the Lightroom ecosystem, including mobile, desktop, iPad, online, and Classic. In addition, Lens Blur is now broadly available with all-new preset capabilities across the Lightroom ecosystem, including mobile, desktop, iPad, web, and Classic.
