Headless portable PCs with everything save a display are becoming increasingly popular among enthusiasts who don’t want to be limited to a laptop that can’t be easily upgraded — and Chinese maker Linglong is taking things a step further with this folding keyboard PC. Ling Long hopes that the device will be more compact and functional than Apple’s MacBook and Mac Mini.
A Chinese startup has created a small PC that is disguised inside a keyboard. The portable PC is designed to fold smaller than a laptop.
Ling Long unveiled the device, which can be carried in your back pocket and contains a 16,000 mAh battery that is supposed to last up to 10 hours.
The motherboard and cooling fan cover one-half of the device, which is powered by AMD’s laptop CPU Ryzen 7 8840U.
However, the device does not have a built-in display. Users can easily connect it to a monitor and mouse to form a complete workstation.
Keyboard around one-fourth of the size of MacBook
The device will apparently be priced between $412 and $495. Currently, Ling Long is offering 200 foldable keyboards to beta testers.
According to the business, the device’s battery may last up to six hours for media playing and four hours for gaming.
When folded, the keyboard is roughly one-quarter the size of an Apple MacBook. All of the keys are standard size, and the keyboard has a small touchpad in the lower-right corner.
There are 3 modes of performance in the device
The device includes a 100 W fast power adaptor and will be offered in 16 GB RAM / 512 GB and 32 GB RAM / 1 TB storage configurations.
The device features a mini-touchpad and three performance modes: Efficiency, Balanced, and Performance.
So far, the company has not announced a release date for the device. However, the corporation is taking orders for certain units.
Unibody design with a dedicated converting mechanism
Ling Long hopes that the device will be more compact and functional than Apple’s MacBook and Mac Mini.
The business refers to their product as a “unibody” design with a specific converting mechanism. Essentially, it is a mini-PC built within a keyboard. The device’s chassis is separated into two compartments: one for the main PC, which has a single active-blower fan and copper heatsink, and one for the battery pack.
The keyboard has a hinge in the center that allows it to fold, and it also includes USB Type-C and Type-A connectors.
Weighing only 800 grams, the device appears to be ideal for office workers who need to transport a laptop to and from work. The lightweight tablet has an eight-core Zen 4 processor with Radeon 780M graphics, giving it a significant power boost.
The reveal of the folding keyboard comes at a time when many tech companies are racing to create small PCs. The GMKtec NucBox M6, Minisforum AtomMan X7 Ti, and Geekom AX8 Pro have all contributed to increased competition in the area.
